Category:2001 softwarePassengers on a Delta Air Lines flight were escorted off the plane Wednesday after several women started praying over an unborn baby, which the woman later revealed was not hers.
The mother said she couldn't stop praying after being told her baby wouldn't survive, according to NBC affiliate KSNV in Las Vegas. The woman, who has had five miscarriages, said she was thinking of a friend who had lost a baby.
"I thought it was my friend who had miscarried," the woman, whose name was not disclosed, told KSNV. "I didn't want anything to happen to my baby."
All of the women praying with the mother were from the Philippines, including the plane's pilot, according to a photo of the woman's Facebook page, which shows a mass of praying hands.
Delta released a statement to USA TODAY and NBC after the incident.
"Delta recognizes that this situation is difficult for all involved and deeply regrets that these events occurred. We are making every effort to ensure this never happens again," the statement read.
"The actions of the passenger involved in this incident are not representative of Delta's values or the standards we require of our employees," it continued. "We are working to identify the passenger involved in this incident and to assist the authorities with their investigation of this situation."
Delta flies to the Philippines several times a week, KSNV reported.
The incident was reported to authorities and the plane had to return to the airport, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The pregnant woman was later taken into custody, the newspaper reported.
The flight was delayed for nearly three hours as authorities investigated the incident, the paper reported.
